The chance seedling of the Runkel apple was discovered in 1940 by Walter E. Runkel in his Lincoln Park, Michigan backyard.
Mr. Runkel's daily habit of discarding pits and cores onto the ground as he walked and ate fruits, resulted in this chance seedling.
The Runkel apple is a fall apple that is both attractive and versatile.
Fowlerville, Michigan has been home to the Runkel apple since 1976. Local Farmers' Markets in Livingston County have offered it for baking, cooking, wine and sauce making as well as for fresh eating.
The Runkel apple's long keeping quality along with its sweet taste makes it a desirable fruit.
